Homeland Security: The focus is on combating terrorism through investigation, detection, location, and apprehension of foreign and domestic terrorists. In this concentration, you will train for law enforcement response to incidents, disasters, and crisis management.

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Criminal Justice at Georgian Court University plays a significant role in the university’s liberal arts education. Many of its courses are mainstays in the university’s core offerings. The department offers bachelor’s degrees in sociology and criminal justice. The criminal justice field is expected to need increased numbers of qualified college graduates, especially in the areas of forensic accounting, homeland security, crime scene analysis, rehabilitation of offenders, and private security. The basic objective of sociology and anthropology studies is to aid in the understanding of human life in all of its manifestations for those interested in a career in the social sciences and those interested in rounding out their liberal arts education. The basic tenet of sociology and anthropology studies is that a person is, by nature, a social creature and that any total understanding of human behavior and experience must include the social and cultural milieu that affects all peoples.

We offer two associate degrees in Criminal Justice. The first is
geared toward working professionals looking to enhance their
on-the-job training with specialized CJ courses, as well as classwork
in communications, computing, health, and human relations.
The other degree is aimed at students aspiring to law enforcement careers and who want the academic
credentials and the police academy experience. (The academy also prepares its students to sit for the Michigan
Commission on Law Enforcement Standards certification exam, a prerequisite for employment in this state.)
Either degree will position you for quick advancement in the field. The rest is up to you.

financial need and need. Preference is given to Federal Pell Grant eligible students.

Mason Crickard $500-$3000 Must be a WV resident. Recommended 3.0 GPA with 1500 SAT (NEW) or
22 ACT. A separate application must be submitted before March 1.
WVWC Legacy $1,000 Must be a dependent of a Wesleyan alumnus.

United Methodist Ministerial Grant 50% of Tuition, Grant candidate must be a dependent of full time clergy member of the
Room and Board United Methodist Church. This award cannot be combined with other
merit awards.
Wesleyan United Methodist Matching Program For confirmed members of the United Methodist Church. Scholarship will
reflect a double and/or triple your dollars program from WVWC and the
United Methodist Higher Education Foundation.
West Virginia Annual Conference (UMC) 50% of Tuition Candidate must have a 2.75 GPA with a 1000 SAT of 1400 (NEW) or
Room and Board 21 ACT and have attended the West Virginia Annual Conference youth
events each of their four years of high school. Qualifying events include
Summer Youth Celebration and/or Fall Workshop. A separate application
must be submitted before March 1. Cannot be combined with other merit
awards.

PERFORMANCE BASED AWARDS
Athletics $500 and up Accepted student-athlete who meets NCAA Division II eligibility
requirements. Athletes must pass NCAA Clearinghouse standards.
Awards are determined by coaches.
Performing Arts (Music and Theatre) $500 and up Audition is required before March 1. Awards are available in vocal and
instrumental music, theatre, technical theatre, musical theatre, and
dance.
Visual Arts $500 and up An art portfolio and separate art scholarship application must be
submitted before March 1.
TRANSFER STUDENT AWARDS
Presidential Scholarship $15,000 3.5 GPA from transferring four-year college or accredited community
college. If less than 12 hours, refer to high school criteria.
Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship $15,000 Active PTK member.
Full-time student at community college.

Dean’s Scholarship $13,000 3.0 Transfer GPA.
Wesleyan Merit Award $11,000 2.5 Transfer GPA.
SCHOLARSHIP POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
• Notification of Academic and Legacy Scholarships will occur at the time of the admission decision. All other scholarship awards (except athletics)
are announced after March 1. Academic awards include the Presidential, Dean’s, and Wesleyan Merit Scholarships (and special awards listed for
transfer students).
• Academic and Legacy Scholarships, and the United Methodist Ministerial Grant are four-year renewable awards. The awards can be applied
to a fifth year of study if a student pursues the Five-Year Undergraduate/Master’s of Business Administration Program.
• Athletics, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Bonner, Sara Elizabeth Blake, McLaughlin Chemistry and English, WV Strawberry Festival, and
Mason Crickard Scholarships are four-year renewable awards. They cannot be applied to a fifth year of study.
• Combination awards require the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid before March 1. Wesleyan’s School Code is 003830.
• Outside scholarships (including the Mason Crickard and the West Virginia Promise Scholarship) will be added to financial aid awards
except for Bonner Scholarship recipients. Wesleyan may adjust an aid package if the outside scholarship (combined with other
scholarships and grants) exceeds the total direct cost. Outside scholarships may also affect loan eligibility.
• Scholarships covering room charges are congruent with a standard double room rate.
There are strict maximums when combining different scholarship sources and financial need may be a factor in determining the total amounts.

Program Overview

Since September 11, 2001, local, state and federal criminal justice agencies and American corporations have changed dramatically. We have witnessed:
A shift in priorities toward terrorism, international crime, and cyber crime;
An unprecedented consolidation into super agencies such as Homeland Security which have forced the merging of organizational cultures;
The creation of new partnerships between public and private organizations charged with public safety and private security;
And the challenge to create new strategies to deal with terrorist threats and traditional crime simultaneously.

These changes have created enormous leadership challenges and it is clear that our very survival as a nation will depend heavily on our ability to produce a new generation of exceptional leaders in the field of criminal justice and homeland and corporate security.

This program is offered on the Queens and Staten Island campuses and the University is exploring off-campus cites such as law enforcement academies. Many courses are offered online through Distance Learning and the University offers a blended degree online.

The SJD is a research-oriented degree program designed for those seeking to pursue careers as law teachers and scholars of law. Candidates enrolled in the SJD program are required to spend their initial academic year in residence at Temple Law. Admission to the SJD program is extremely selective and only a few candidates will be offered admission each year. SJD applicants must present outstanding academic credentials and demonstrate the capacity to complete a doctoral dissertation of publishable quality that will make an original contribution to scholarly legal literature.

The SJD Program Committee (”the Committee”) is comprised of tenured presidential faculty. It will make admissions decisions, establish and coordinate dissertation committees, review candidates’ progress, and carry out other activities necessary and proper in the administration of the SJD program. The Committee will have the authority to waive admission, residency, and other program requirements in exceptional circumstances.

All applicants should also carefully review the SJD Program Standards.

The admissions process is highly selective, and successful candidates typically have high academic credentials or promise. Accepted first-year students matriculate only in the fall term to begin a program leading to the juris doctor degree.

Character and Fitness to Practice Law

Law school graduates must become admitted to the bar of a state or territory in order to practice law there. All jurisdictions have standards of character and fitness that candidates are required to meet in order to become admitted to the bar. Applicants therefore should consult the websites of the bar examiners of the jurisdictions in which they wish to become admitted - see http://www.ncbex.org/bar-admissions/offices/ for bar examiners’ contact information and links to bar examiners’ websites - and should also try to consult with an official of the bar if necessary to discover whether any past conduct could keep them from becoming admitted to the bar upon graduation from law school. (Please be aware, however, that the bar examiners of some jurisdictions, such as New Jersey, refuse to discuss these matters with prospective or current law students or to give “advisory opinions”.)

The application form of Rutgers School of Law - Camden requests detailed information relevant to certification to a state bar. Applicants are required to disclose fairly and completely on the application any information that may in any way reflect on character and fitness to practice law. The bar examiners in every state require law schools to provide them with an assessment of the student’s character and fitness for the practice of law. This requirement typically includes information provided by the student on the student’s application, including criminal proceedings or other disciplinary actions, whether in the past or ongoing. Please note that failure of applicants to disclose all relevant information on the law school application can result in the offer of admission being revoked prospectively or retroactively, separation from the law school after matriculation, as well as other disciplinary action.
