In recent years we have seen a significant expansion in career opportunities for graduates whose first degree is in criminology or a criminology-related area. One dimension to this has been the increased spending on the criminal justice system in the UK, and employment opportunities here include policing, the courts, prisons, probation and youth offending. We have also seen an increase in community regeneration and community-based projects, together with a growth in local authority personnel specialising in crime, disorder and community safety; these developments have created a range of career opportunities for criminology graduates. There are various public (e.g. the Home Office) and private organisations that engage in crime-related research and there are employment opportunities for suitably qualified people within pressure groups or campaigning organisations whose work involves issues of crime and disorder, as well as within the media in general. The Criminology degree will also provide, of course, a pathway into further, more advanced study. Furthermore, Durham graduates have excellent employment prospects and it is a popular university for employers to recruit from. Our students enter a range of careers, including as policy researchers and advisors, market researchers, project leaders, social workers, youth workers, community development workers, journalists, teachers, lecturers, human resources managers, recruitment consultants and sport coaches.

The growth in the criminal justice system has resulted in the creation of many employment opportunities and also to a requirement for enhanced knowledge and skills from those seeking such employment or to develop their careers opportunities. Criminology as an academic discipline has its roots in sociology. However, at The University of Northampton this approach has been enhanced with significant inputs from Law and Psychology which enables students on the undergraduate programme to engage with a broad range of perspectives from social and legal theory, criminal justice and forensic psychology. This eclectic approach will underpin the structure and delivery of the proposed postgraduate degree programme.
A postgraduate qualification in Criminology is seen as a highly desirable element in applications for careers in policing, the prison and probation service. It is also anticipated that successful MSc graduates will consider the prospect of studying for a PhD.
Current University staff can provide supervision in areas such as policing, prisons, forensic psychology, youth crime and issues in gender and crime.

The graduate program in criminal justice was launched in September 2002 and offers a curriculum in the administration of criminal justice, leading to the Master of Arts. The program is designed for those seeking career opportunities or advancement in justice-related fields in addition to those who seek preparation for doctoral study. Students take courses in public management and budgeting and acquire a broad understanding of the criminal justice system, including contemporary issues affecting it and the analytic skills required to conduct and apply research and to assess public policy. The nationally-recognized faculty is multidisciplinary. The public administration faculty offers courses that equip students with the skills to oversee complex public agencies. The criminal justice faculty emphasizes social science theories and methods to impart a comprehensive understanding of crime and the justice system. Faculty members in the School of Law, social work, history and liberal studies provide a wide array of electives. Evening classes meet the needs of students who work or have other obligations during the day.
See information for prospective students and the links on the sidebar for more information about our program.

Students eager to accelerate their education and expand their career opportunities can choose to apply for the combined five-year B.S/M.A. program, leading to an M.A. degree in Criminal Justice. The B.S./M.A. program enables criminal justice majors to begin fulfilling core requirements for a master’s degree while completing the bachelor’s degree.
Students admitted to the program may apply nine credit hours taken in their senior year toward the M.A. degree. Courses for the M.A. degree complement the undergraduate schedule, preparing B.S./M.A. students for the greater challenges of a graduate program in their senior year and for broader career opportunities in the future.
After graduating with a B.S. degree, students complete remaining course requirements for the M.A. degree during a fifth year at Loyola. An internship or thesis may then be completed during the summer or following semester.
