Program of study: A passion for society
As majors in anthropology and sociology at Rockford College, students may pursue a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree and choose from a number of concentrations: anthropology and sociology, criminal justice and pre-social work. In each area, the all-college and divisional requirements ensure a strong liberal arts foundation for a more specialized program of study. Students may have a wide range of academic internship opportunities to work for a semester in an agency or organization in the community and earn credits toward graduation.

Rockford College’s Anthropology & Sociology Department offers students the opportunity to major in a number of concentrations, including anthropology and sociology, criminal justice and pre-social work. Degree requirements for these programs can be found in the academic catalog.

When Loyola University Chicago created the criminal justice major in 1975, there were 50 full-time and 29 part-time majors. By 2005, more than 1,500 students have been awarded a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Criminal Justice and more than 90 have earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Criminal Justice.

Our mission is to provide a comprehensive liberal arts education that prepares students for various options after they receive their degrees, including professional school, graduate school, or a rewarding career in the criminal justice field. Our students have gone into careers that span the field of criminal justice, from police officers to judges, prosecutors to defense attorneys, probation and parole officers, investigators, and researchers across all levels of government, and in both the public and private sector.

Sociology Minor
A minor in sociology consists of a minimum of 16 hours, including SOC 101, 301, and 304.

Anthropology Minor
A minor in anthropology consists of a minimum of 15 hours, including ANT 201 and 12 additional hours in Anthropology, six of which must number 300 or above.

Criminal Justice Minor
The minor in criminal justice consists of 16 credit hours, including SOC 101, CRJ 260, CRJ 490, and two 300-level Criminal Justice courses. With permission of the chair, SOC 313 may be taken in place of one of the two 300-level CRJ electives in the minor.
Departmental Honors

Majors may qualify for departmental honors in sociology by qualifying for membership in Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.
